Tarot Pronunciation

The word Tarot comes from the Italian word 'Tarocchi' which otherwise means recklessness. Having said that, Italy could have been the place Tarot cards became popular before moving to the rest of Europe during the middle ages. While the exact origin of Tarot cards is still unknown, facts and fables have Tarot cards being connected to the Gypsies.

The Gypsies were wanderers. These nomadic people moved across in large Caravans. Their origin is considered as India from where they began traveling thousands of years ago and spread across central Asian Steppes and later in Europe. Their language was loosely related to Romani, an Indo-Aryan language.

Gypsies were many a times considered as an obscure and often a dangerous community which mostly camped outside the villages. Their livelihood was sheep raring, crafts entertainment, being ironsmith and very often fortune telling through Tarot cards or Oracles. Their typical dressing and impulsive behavior made them an object of mystique.

Tarot cards are pronounced as 'TARO', where the last T is silent or suppressed.
You can refer to the link below in order to listen to the sound of the word where the first T is stressed while the last T is suppressed, making it sound like a four letter word. I am including the audio link below for a better understanding.

Some interesting facts about Tarot cards.

1. Tarot cards strongly believe in the philosophy of  'Karma' or self effort.
2. Luck actually means Karma, it is a result of your own efforts. (Luck should not be confused with destiny, which is what you are born with).
3. The entire Minor Arcana in Tarot is devoted to the philosophy of self effort.
4. Tarot cards were also used as playing cards.
5. Tarot deck can be easily compared to normal playing cards. I will write a separate article on it.
6. Original Tarot cards were comprised of Major Arcana. Minor Arcana was         added later on.
7. Tarot cards readings are based on constructing a  story linking the cards.
8. The philosophy of Tarot cards is different from Astrology. While astrology believes on calculations of planetary combinations, where a  person guides you to your future, Tarot cards believe in the concept which is focused on self analysis of situation looking at the state of one's mind and the environment, being reflected in the spread.

My personal experience in Tarot readings have made me to relish the fact that man/woman controls his/her own destiny. Tarot shows a person a path to a resolution, even if the surrounding environment does not look conducive, so it is a  great solution providing mechanism, based out of self effort.
